Introduction:
The Brazilian
Coastal Institute - BRCoastal was founded in 2003 to support the project "Aventura
no Brasil Costal - ABC da Difusão da Gestão das Águas Costeiras" (web site in
portuguese) that is a sailing expedition along the Brazilian coast to build awareness on
coastal water management and marine environment. It consists of anchoring at approximately
203 locations where outdoor seminars will be organized for the general public, with the
assistance of academics, specialists and media; it will also include appearances by
writers and perfomers -- to encourage a positive atmosphere; the national contest
"Create an Eco-Microproject" (adopt a tree, clean a slice of a beach, etc). The
BCI will rely on a network of coordinators to prepare these meetings and continous
interaction with the expedition through the Internet.
The BCI is supported by
the Brazilian Navy, the Oceanographic Museum of Rio Grande, the Ministry of Environment,
the Fundação Roberto Marinho, the PNUMA-Brazil, the SECIRM (Secretariat of the Inter
Ministerial Commission for the Resources of the Sea) and a national network of scholars,
scientists, researchers and environmentalists.
Projects:
In parallel we also developed five diferent projects with similar
objectives:
1 - A workshop entitled
"The Sea: I Use It, I Manage it, I Enjoy It - a solidary reponsibility"
which aims to promote the awareness of the marine environment as a whole, its integrated
management and its multiple functions related to the human and physical aspects. The
target paticipants for this workshop are university students and junior highschool
students. There will have appropriate adaptation of content for each of these tagets.
2 - Scholarships:
we approach universities from the Brazilian coastal states and abroad to obtain
scholarships for selected students. These students are monitored by the BCI and must
achieve a high level performance and develop a project related to the objectives of the
BCI.
3 - Lighthouses
of Brazil - an interactive the coastal zone programme: consists of providing the
general public with the aid of universities students engaged on social projects with a
"ready to fill in fact sheet" and an usage guide in order to report facts and
events related to the coastline. The Brazilian coastaline will be demarcated by its
lighthouses along the coast and their historic and nostalgic importance will be used to
"light up" the general public´s maritime awareness.
