He was born on August 19th, 1960 in Miami, Florida. His father was Gregory H. Hemingway, the third son of Enest Hemingway. His mother's name is Alice Thomas. He has seven brothers and sisters and is the second oldest of his father's children (from three different wives). He spent his childhood in Miami but finished high school (in 1979) in Connecticut at the prep school his father attended. He graduated from U.C.L.A. (University of California at Los Angeles) in 1983 with a B.A. in History (specializing in South American history). In 1984 moved to Italy and has more or less been there ever since. His wife Ornella Canedoli is a Canadian/Italian and they have a five year old boy, Michael. For a living he teaches English, translate and write short stories and articles for periodicals. |

Zilda Cruz Leal Martins was graduated in
Library Science at Santa Úrsula University, and post-graduated at UNIRIO. She was
Vice-President of the Professional Association of Librarians of Rio de Janeiro, Secretary
of the Librarian Regional Council (CRB, 7o chapter), and among many others
activities related to books she was Director of the Estate Library of Rio de Janeiro. Zilda retired recently and devoted her time to this creative and profitable dilettantism, The Literary Clinic. She provides services of research and referral of titles and work of specific interests to executives and graduated students. This unique occupation is shared with her good friend João Carlos Ribeiro, who is also a graduated and an active librarian based in Rio de Janeiro. |

Paul L. Maier is Professor of History at
Western Michigan University. A graduate of Harvard University (M.A., 1954) and Concordia
Seminary, St. Louis (B.D., 1955), he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue
post-graduate studies at the Universities of Heidelberg, Germany, and Basel, Switzerlan,
where he studied under Karl Barth and Oscar Cullman. Maier received his doctorate in
philosophy, summa cum laude, in 1957, the first American ever to win highest
honors at the Swiss university. Among his numerous awards is the "Professor of the Year" citation as one of America's 25 finest educators, conferred in 1984 by the Washington-based Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Maier has traveled extensively, lectures widely, and has published 12 books and more than 200 articles. He lives with his wife, Joan, and their four daughters in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and devoted his business career to providing consulting services to business organizations: psychological assessments of senior executive candidates, management training and organization development. He lived with his family in Rio de Janeiro during the 70s, where he provided consulting services to Brazilian and international companies. Alan has translated the literary works of a number of Latin American authors from Argentina, Colombia and Brazil. The Brazilian authors translated include Eduardo Alves da Costa, Rubens Figueiredo, Cristovão Tezza and Paulo Coelho. He has translated virtually all of Coelhos books into English, most notably "The Alchemist," which is soon to be released as a Warner Brothers film. |
